Directions to the sites listed below are given using street and road designations shown on Google maps. Alternatively, a city map for Grand Forks and East Grand Forks and county maps for Grand Forks and Polk County can be used. Some birders prefer to use the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer for North Dakota. There is also an atlas for Minnesota.

Kellys Slough Tour: Kellys Slough National Wildlife Refuge and associated Waterfowl Production Areas provide some of the best known birding ites in Eastern North Dakota. Due to the relative lack of lakes and marshes in the Red River Valley, Kellys attracts a wide variety of waterfowl and shorebirds.

Prairies of Oakville Township: Native prairies and grazed pastures in Oakville Township host a variety of prairie species, including some that are present at their eastern limit of range.

Greater Prairie Chicken Management Areas: Grasslands in the northern part of Grand Forks County, although not native, are managed for Greater Prairie Chicken, which are at their northwestern limit of range. Many other grassland species benefit.

Greater Grand Forks Greenway: A large Greenway between the dikes along the Red River and Red Lake River provides many opportunities to find songbirds, along with hawks and eagles.

English Coulee Greenway: The Greenway along the English Coulee has a distinctly different habitat than that found along the Red and Red Lake River Greenways.

Grand Forks Memorial Park Cemetery: This cemetery has been more consistently birded in all seasons than any other area in the region. It is an excellent place to find migrants, especially warblers, in the spring.

Turtle River State Park: Turtle River State Park is a 784-acre park approximately 22 miles west of Grand Forks, ND. The park contains a variety of habitats typical of the Agassiz Lake Plain, from bottomland forest to upland prairie. The park is a summer breeding haven for 93 species of birds and a migratory stopover for many others.
