Long-eared Owl
Following
a tip by Eve Freeberg, this Long-Eared Owl was photographed by Dave Lambeth on
Oct 16, 2004, as it spent the day in a small Russian Olive near the Grand Forks
Air Force Base. This species nested near Gilby in the summer of 2004 to provide
a first county nesting record. They likely nest more often in the area than
anyone knows. Prime locations to search for nests are farm shelters where old
crow and squirrel nests are present.
